Our Students Living Active and Healthy Lives
Whether through one the 50 official SR sports teams for Grades 5-12, our dynamic PE classes for all grades, "unofficial" Gator teams competing in County recreational leagues, or some other form of fitness, all Gators are getting #GatorStrong! SR features many recreational league teams for all grades, many coached by parents who volunteer.
Our Grade 11 Montgomery County rec team ("the Gators", of course ) went undefeated this season and were division champs. Coach Tim Hohman, who was assisted by Steve Sullivan, have coached some of these SR girls since Grade 1. According to Coach Hohman, "The girls had a lot of fun and played ferocious defense which led to a lot of steals and fast break points." Also of note, Maggie Valaik '18 was nicknamed "the Eraser" because she led the league in blocked shots, and Janie Bell '18 was the team's leading scorer garnering the nickname, "Ms. Big Shot!" Team members included Kate Hohman, Janie Bell, Emma Sullivan, Talia Scott, Elizabeth Haley, Elizabeth Delaney, Theo Brophy, Maggie Valaik, Catherine Spina, and featured guest appearances from Tati Ortega and Zoe Sinkford.
Another team of note is the Grade 2 Gator soccer team which is off to a great start this spring. Opening the season with a 2-0 win (almost a hat trick by Eleanor Korte '27), while playing with no substitutes, the team continued their winning ways this past weekend as they supplemented their fast speed with great teamwork and accurate passing to win 5-1 (goals from Larkin Malloy, Olivia Netram, and Junia Whang). Members of the team include: Gigi Apori, Maeve Christmas, Catherine Donatelli, Alessandra Ferguson, Natalie Kehl, Eleanor Korte, Larkin Malloy, Olivia Netram, and Junia Whang.
We are so proud of all our gators who reflect the overarching goal of instilling lifelong health and wellness through recreational sports. #goSRgators #SRtogether #GatorStrong

Catherine Ronan Karrels '86 was honored by the John Carroll Society of DC
On May 6, Head of School Catherine Ronan Karrels '86 was honored by the John Carroll Society of DC, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown, alongside three lay heads of area Catholic schools. Mrs. Karrels said, "It was a great honor standing side-by-side three other Catholic school leaders--Dan Kerns of Georgetown Visitation, Katy Prebble of the Academy of the Holy Cross, and Jeff Mancabelli of St. John's College High School, as we were each honored with the John Carroll Society medal. I believe that this award is in recognition of our community and the great collective work that is transpiring at Stone Ridge. As we strive to make the love of God known in the world, we do so as a team. I accepted this award as a shared honor for all the members of our Sacred Heart community. We each play an important part in the mission not only of Sacred Heart education, but in the mission of the Catholic Church."
President John Garvey of The Catholic University of America delivered a moving talk on why Catholic education matters as witness and to the student-teacher relationship.

SR Volunteers Paint a Mural at SHARE
On Saturday, April 29, two SR art teachers, along with several SR parents and students volunteered at SHARE. SHARE is a food network sponsored by Catholic Charities. They have a new home on Landover, MD and our SR volunteers created and painted a mural in their warehouse.
A special thanks to parent volunteer, Elaine Vining, SRPA Community Service Chair, who organized this volunteer effort. According to SHARE Director Jaynee Acevedo, "Elaine is the quintessential professional volunteer. Her love for the school radiates from every action she takes. Rare is the volunteer who acts in such an organized manner, is so pleasant and flexible, yet so in command of the mission."
Art teacher Emma Cowan, gave much of her advance time to plan the mural. Ms. Acevedo said "I can only imagine the richness Mrs. Cowan brings to her classroom as she drills down the importance of every element of life that becomes art." Art Teacher Lee Newman was also on hand to lend his expertise and help the students get started and watch them fly on their own with the painting.
Our SR girls took great pride in working on this project as they painted a watermelon, pineapple, mango, strawberries and grapes (and even a Sacred Heart). Living out Goal III, our girls demonstrated social awareness through their actions. Through the Social Action program at SR, volunteering becomes a part of who are students are.
Ms. Acevedo concluded her comments with "Awesome leadership, awesome design details, awesome energetic and talented students! Thank you, Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart!"

Varsity Softball Wins First Postseason Championship Since 2009
For the past three consecutive seasons, the Stone Ridge varsity softball program has competed in the ISL A Division Championship. In 2015, the team was confident, yet, in the end, too young and ultimately overwhelmed by a very strong Episcopal team. The following season in 2016, the talent, experience, and conviction were all there as the team ended the regular season as co-champions, suffering only one defeat and breezing through the playoffs. The team played a near perfect game against St. Stephens & St. Agnes only to lose a heartbreaker 3-2.
With a lot of key members of the team returning, 2017 clearly seemed like the year the team would finally break through. As is the case in sports, you don't win on paper and you have to play the games! Opponents had a different belief, and heading into the final game of the regular season, which was senior day, the team was one game under .500, and postseason success appeared impossible. However, despite mix ups with start times, something special happened to this team. In fact, it had been evident all season that the talent and potential was there, but not until about the 4th inning of that game against Madeira did everything come together and "click." After battling for the first four innings, the game ended with the Gators winning 16-6. The team clearly found its groove--it found its swagger, and that mojo visibly continued during the quarterfinal playoff game with a win, 18-1.
Next up in the semi-final game this past Saturday was first-seed and regular season champion Episcopal. The champs came into the game with an undefeated regular season record, a relatively easy defeat of the Gators earlier in the season, a dominant pitcher, and by all accounts appeared unstoppable. The Gators had different plans, and overcame not only incredible odds, but showed incredible character and grit pulling out an exciting 7-6 win that no one other than themselves ever gave them a chance to win.
In the championship on Sunday, it was clear the team was not going to lose a third straight final, easily defeating GDS 16-7. GDS certainly didn't make it easy for the first 5 innings, but the Gators broke the game open in the 6th and never looked back. The senior trio of Grace Heming, Maddie Bryant, and Landry Werth provided the perfect leadership and experience for a team that was well-balanced in each class with juniors Carly Page, Cate Willing, Ciara Collins, sophomores Catherine Heming, Mel Pane, Addi Poole, Meaghan Carey, Genevieve Lange, and freshman Katherine Pane.
Congratulations, Gators, on your championship! #goSRgators #GatorStrong #SRtogether

Our Lady of Fatima Statue Graces Chapel
Stone Ridge has been blessed to host Our Lady of Fatima statue through May 26. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima to three shepherd children in the village of Fatima in Portugal in 1917. Roman Catholics believe the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, has appeared throughout the world, often in times of crisis.
The faithful believe Our Lady of Fatima appeared six times to Lucia, 9, and her cousins Francisco, 8, and his sister Jacinta, 6, between May 13, 1917 and October 13, 1917. The apparition was of a woman who wore white, held a rosary and asked the children to pray. It is believed that 70,000 people witnessed one appearance. The Virgin Mary came with a message, promising that the world would be in peace and believers would go to heaven if her requests were obeyed. By 1930, a bishop approved the apparitions, which the Church has deemed authentic.
On May 13, 2017, Pope Francis canonized Jacinta and Francisco Marta, two of the original children visionaries.
David and Elizabeth Molina are the custodians and Ambassadors of this Pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima, bringing it to homes and Churches and Chapels to encourage devotion to our Blessed Mother and the praying of the Rosary for all our special needs and our Lady's requests.
All are welcome to visit and see this beautiful statue in the Chapel in Hamilton House before Friday, May 26.
