17 Stone Ridge Upper School students and six members of the faculty and staff spent the first week of summer volunteering in Logan County, West Virginia, through the Appalachia Service Project (ASP). The work crews repaired joists, installed new sub-flooring, and replaced a tin roof while building relationships with three wonderful homeowners. Through this service-learning experience, these Stone Ridge girls put their faith in action while building leadership and teamwork. This year, Stone Ridge also received a certificate of recognition for five years of dedicated service to the people of Central Appalachia.
Grace Bullard '22 reflected, "ASP fostered a true love of service within me, and showed me generosity, empathy, and peace in every person involved in the life-changing program. It brought me closer to my Stone Ridge sisters, God, and the community of Logan County as we all worked together." Caroline Speidel '21 said, "The two weeks that I have spent repairing homes in Appalachia as a volunteer for ASP have been some of the most unique and eye-opening weeks of my life. Through volunteering with ASP, I not only have acquired skills with tools, but have also formed new relationships and gained a fresh perspective on what it means to serve and bring peace to others. This organization truly changes the lives of both the volunteers who serve and the people who are served."
