Varsity Softball Wins First Postseason Championship Since 2009

For the past three consecutive seasons, the Stone Ridge varsity softball program has competed in the ISL A Division Championship. In 2015, the team was confident, yet, in the end, too young and ultimately overwhelmed by a very strong Episcopal team. The following season in 2016, the talent, experience, and conviction were all there as the team ended the regular season as co-champions, suffering only one defeat and breezing through the playoffs. The team played a near perfect game against St. Stephens & St. Agnes only to lose a heartbreaker 3-2.

With a lot of key members of the team returning, 2017 clearly seemed like the year the team would finally break through. As is the case in sports, you don't win on paper and you have to play the games! Opponents had a different belief, and heading into the final game of the regular season, which was senior day, the team was one game under .500, and postseason success appeared impossible. However, despite mix ups with start times, something special happened to this team. In fact, it had been evident all season that the talent and potential was there, but not until about the 4th inning of that game against Madeira did everything come together and "click." After battling for the first four innings, the game ended with the Gators winning 16-6. The team clearly found its groove--it found its swagger, and that mojo visibly continued during the quarterfinal playoff game with a win, 18-1.

Next up in the semi-final game this past Saturday was first-seed and regular season champion Episcopal. The champs came into the game with an undefeated regular season record, a relatively easy defeat of the Gators earlier in the season, a dominant pitcher, and by all accounts appeared unstoppable. The Gators had different plans, and overcame not only incredible odds, but showed incredible character and grit pulling out an exciting 7-6 win that no one other than themselves ever gave them a chance to win.

In the championship on Sunday, it was clear the team was not going to lose a third straight final, easily defeating GDS 16-7. GDS certainly didn't make it easy for the first 5 innings, but the Gators broke the game open in the 6th and never looked back. The senior trio of Grace Heming, Maddie Bryant, and Landry Werth provided the perfect leadership and experience for a team that was well-balanced in each class with juniors Carly Page, Cate Willing, Ciara Collins, sophomores Catherine Heming, Mel Pane, Addi Poole, Meaghan Carey, Genevieve Lange, and freshman Katherine Pane.

Congratulations, Gators, on your championship! #goSRgators #GatorStrong #SRtogether

The summer before her junior year at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, Emily Stutzman '17 traveled to Sweden with her family. It was during one of the first waves of the refugee crisis, and she saw people who had fled their homes lining the streets, asking for help, and noticed Amnesty International there trying to manage the crisis.

In their efforts to fight hate, Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart earned a "No Place For Hate" award from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The award was given to SR at a May 17 ceremony at the U.S. Navy Memorial Heritage Center.

Six other schools from Virginia and elsewhere in Maryland also received the distinction. The winning schools each completed three activities that had a school-wide impact and promoted respect and inclusion.

"These schools are leading the way in a grassroots fight against bias, bigotry and bullying in their communities," stated Seth Gordon-Lipkin, an ADL education director. "The students, educators and family members who have championed these efforts have sent a clear, unified message that hatred has no place in the hallways and classrooms of their schools."

Mother Nature may have sent rain but she didn't dampen our spirits for the annual Stone Ridge Golf & Tennis Classic. Held on May 22 at Argyle Country Club, over 100 golfers enjoyed an afternoon of 18 holes, a putting contest, delicious lunch and dinner and jovial talk with good friends.

Building community and raising funds for Stone Ridge's extensive athletic department is what the annual Golf & Tennis Classic is all about. This year, over $50,000 in sponsorship donations alone was raised!

Joe DiZinno was awarded the Harkins Award this year, as a leading community member committed to and passionate about SR athletics.

While the tennis players got rained out, we know they'll be up for next year's tournament.

Special thanks to our sponsors, such as Grade Line Engineering, Total Wine & More, Normandy Carpet, Ease Technology, Ridgewells, Scott and Kammie Bell, the Payne Family and many more.

SR Holds First-Ever Kindergarten Field Day

It was an exciting day for Stone Ridge kindergartners as they kicked off a week full of "Field Day" activities. This is the first time that SR kindergartners will have the chance to participate in Field Day activities, which will include parachute games, relays, bean bag tosses and frisbee competitions on Gator Field.

Organized by teachers Lesley Sheldon and Emily Stewart, the activities will allow the kindergartners a taste of what life will be like when they move on to be big first graders.

Field Day at Stone Ridge, officially held next Tuesday, June 6, is a time honored tradition offering students the last opportunity to win points for their Blue and Gold teams. The day includes morning competitions between students, games and food with students' fathers in the afternoon, and a final all-school sports awards celebration at which time the school discovers which team, Blue or Gold, will be victorious for the year.

Super fun! #goSRgators #SRtogether #GatorStrong

Olenka Wellisz '17 Featured in Catholic Standard for her Oil Painting Mastery

For her independent study, Stone Ridge senior Olenka Wellisz took on the challenging task of recreating a Rembrandt using the exact methods the master painter would have taken in the 17th century. What does that entail? Rabbit-skin glue for tightening the canvas, ground up pigment for creating the oil paints, and making a preliminary sketch that took an entire month before even starting the actual painting.

Read all of the extraordinary details of Wellisz's project in the May 24 Catholic Standard. Take special note – the article is written by another exceptional SR Senior, Imani Benberry '17, showcasing her excellent mastery of the written word in journalism.

Internships Give SR Seniors Taste of Working World

Since the end of May, Stone Ridge Seniors have been hard at work - literally - in courtrooms, operating rooms, radio stations and other professional settings in the metropolitan area for their fourth year internship. Below, just a sampling of the exciting opportunities our Seniors were afforded.

Sophia Ciatto and Julia Condron spent their interning days at the United States Treasury. Their work helped them to understand how the department impacts Americans' lives. "We have explored various fields at the Treasury, including tax, small business, and financial policy, and have come to better understand the many important subcategories that make up the Treasury," said the girls.

Their days were filled with important tasks including sitting in on meetings with staff members and outside companies, attending think tank panels, and working on two projects: Tax Policy during Conflicts and Women in Small Businesses.

Naomi Steplight gained invaluable lessons in communications by interning at local radio station WHUR. During her weeks there she focused on writing news stories. Naomi explains, "Every day, I reported to my supervisor what the top news stories were for WHUR's demographic. Then, I wrote up a script informing listeners about these top stories and I read my script to the supervisor for editing. I did this every thirty minutes for about three hours, mimicking my supervisor's average day reporting the news. I learned how to use a special program to find stories and write copy as well as how to record myself reading my own script."

Michelle Vaca interned for the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health. Working alongside Heather Benz '03 Michelle worked with HAPTIX, a virtual reality lab that aims to test prosthetics. "I was tasked with utilizing Solidworks to 3D print the virtual objects used in the lab into real-life objects to later test with amputees. I also attended meetings with Ms. Benz to get insight into the legal side of the FDA, specifically relating to patient preference surveys and clinical trials."
